The Artist
John Moss
was born in Dudley in Worcestershire (now in the West Nidlands)
in 1942, and after qualifying at Wolverhampton College of Art
in Painting and Lithography in 1964, came to Manchester to complete
teacher training at the (then) Manchester College of Art (now
the Metropolitan University of Manchester) and English at Manchester
University.
Having discovered
the delights of Manchester, he stayed, married, had a family and
worked as a teacher and lecturer in many educational establishments
in the region for 30-odd years - including Manchester Grammar
School, Stand College, Bury College and later as a commercial
web consultant at Bolton Institute.
Despite having
intended a life as an aspiring painter, John diversified rapidly,
into photography, illustration and graphic design. Originally,
graphics was a matter of drawing, cut and paste, a good knowledge
of typography, and a handy supply of Letraset. But, with the emergence
of computers and early drawing packages (albeit very crude ones)
in the mid 1980s, John was quick to pick up a mouse and try his
hand.
Needless to
say, he was quickly hooked and gradually began to develop fairly
sophisticated computer generated graphics. John introduced it
as a subject and taught it for several years at Bury College.
During this time, he maintained his own work output and entered
many international design competitions - the examples illustrated
opposite are all prize winning entries in the Corel International
Design Competition.
In 1994, John
took early retirement to work on developing and extending his
computer graphic skills, having worked in multimedia authoring
and CD-ROM development as a freelance. That year he also established
Papillon Graphics. (Perhaps it's worth pointing out that his favourite
drawing implement is still the pencil).
More recently
he has been working almost exclusively on web design and development.
This website ("Manchester UK") is an example of his
work, and aptly demonstrates his skills as a designer and as a
researcher/writer.
There are
many other examples of his artwork to be found at the ServerBank
website.
