Set
at the confluence of 3 canals, the Portland Basin Industrial Heritage
Centre tells the social and economic history of the people of
Tameside, with permanent, visiting and changing exhibitions. Set
exhibits cover everything from cotton spinning to Fish and Chips!,
including a fully restored water wheel.
Located
at the junction of the Lower Peak
Forest Canal, the Ashton
Canal and the Huddersfield
Narrow Canal. There is easy access to the Tame Valley and
canal towpath walks from the centre, and there are usually colourful
traditional canal boats moored alongside or near to the Centre.
Heritage Canal Cruises operate from here in summertime.
Admission
is free and there is full disabled access and free car parking
adjacent to the Centre.

Open Summer from Tuesday to Saturday 10.00am-6.00pm, and from
12noon-6.00pm on Sundays. Closed Mondays except Bank Holidays.
Winter opening is from 10.00am-4.00pm weekdays and 12noon-4.00pm
on Sundays.
