The Post Codes of Greater Manchester

Greater Manchester postcodes are idiosychratic and often bear little resemblance to boundaries or townships. Bury, for example, has a Bolton postcode (BL); Altrincham has a WA (that is Warrington) postcode, which is not in Greater Manchester at all. Similarly, much of Tameside has an OL (Oldham) or an SK (Stockport) postcode, as does Poynton in Cheshire. Parts of SK14, for example, actually represent areas of Derbyshire - and there are many others. Postcodes are intended for the administrative and convenient purposes of mail dlivery and for no other reason - they mark no real or otherwise significant boundaries.
