Education & Training

Higher Education (HE) in Manchester
Greater Manchester is well served with Educational
and Training establishments at all levels. Within the Metropolitan
County are 4 universities - Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan,
UMIST (formerly the oldest technological university in Britain,
now part of the University of Manchester) and Salford Universities,
as well as the University of Bolton among them.
Higher education institutions in the United Kingdom are the sole
awarders of degrees at Bachelor, Postgraduate, Masters and Doctorate
levels. Almost always students will be 18 years and older.
NOTE:
Please note that the former UMIST has now become part of the University
of Manchester, and we are awaiting updates.
Further Education (FE) in Manchester
There are many further education establishments
within the region, including Colleges of Further Education and
Sixth Form Colleges. Amongst these are numerous denominational
institutions including Catholic and other religious types, as
well as specialist colleges (of Music, for example).
These colleges offer a range of qualifications including A-Levels
(Advanced Levels), usually required for entry to Universities
or other HE Institutions, National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs)
obtained through work with some college attendance, and General
National Vocational Qualifications (GNVQs), usually studied full
time at college but with a distinctive training for work bias
and work placement/experience.
Usually 16-18 years old students, but often including "late
starters" or "mature" students. Typically, students
would hope to acquire between 3 and 5 A-Levels or equivalents.
Many Further Education establishments are also Adult Centres,
that is, they serve as evening or part-time day college and run
courses designed for adult learners - they generally offer a range
of vocational and non-vocational courses from languages to hobbies
like cookery or flower arranging.
Secondary Education in Manchester
High Schools, Comprehensive Schools, Public
Schools and Grammar Schools (though the latter are by now very
rare and usually signify a private fee paying school of some kind)
- secondary schools come in many guises, reflected in the intention
to offer as wide a choice for parents as possible.
They deal with students from age 11 to 16, and lead to a basic
matriculation qualification, the GCSE or the General Certificate
of Secondary Education (still known amongst some as "O"
or Ordinary Levels). Students would normally expect to acquire
between 5 and 9 subject passes at this level to go on to higher
levels.
Primary, Infants & Junior Schools in Manchester
Many schools at this level would actually be
Primary, Infants or Junior Schools, with children aged from 4
to 11 years, though there are still separate Primary/Infants Schools
(aged 4-8 or so) and Junior Schools (8-11 years).
At this stage all pupils will follow a common National Curriculum
designed to instil basic literacy and numeracy.
This level also includes many denominational schools, including
Church Schools (Church of England, or CofE), as well as Catholic,
Jewish and Islamic Schools.
