Dining and drinking around Greater Manchester

Public Houses, Pubs & Inns in South Manchester

  • Red Lion
    Wilmslow Road, Withington, Manchester 20.
    Tel: 0161-434 2441.
Open Monday-Saturday 11.00am-11.00pm, and on Sundays 12noon-3.00pm and 7.00pm-10.30pm. This old and much extended, low ceiling "cottage" pub is a favourite with the south Manchester student crowds. The bowling green-beer garden is a great attraction on summer evenings. Good beer, including Marston's Bitter, Pedigree, Owd Rodger and guest beers, and food in an intimate (if busy) atmosphere.

  • Fletcher Moss
1 William Street, Didsbury, Manchester M20.
Open Mon-Sat from 12noon-11.00pm and Sunday from 12noon - 10.30pm. Real ales available including Hydes Bitter, Mild, Premium and Black. Recently refurbished pub, popular with locals. An interesting collection of old photographs and cigarette cards.

  • Royal Oak
729 Wilmslow Road, Didsbury Village, Manchester 20. Tel: 0161-445 3152.
Restored to its former glory after a disastrous fire, this pub offers a wide range of cheese and pâté lunches of giant proportions. No games, music or children allowed. Sky Sports television. A busy old-fashioned and comfortable inn. Open Mon-Sat 11.00am-11.00pm, Sunday 12noon-3.00pm and 7.00pm-7.30pm.

  • The Didsbury
    852 Wilmslow Road, East Didsbury,

This fine old pub is now part of the Chef & Brewer chain of Carvery Restaurants.

  • Ye Olde Cock Inn

    Manchester 20

  • The Marble Beer House
    57 Manchester Road, Chorlton, Manchester M21. Tel: 0161-881 9206.
Open Mon-Sat from 12noon-11.00pm and Sundays from 12noon-10.30pm. Real ales available, including Marble Brewery Bitter, Chorlton Bitter and Totally Marbled. A cosy friendly pub converted from a one-time off-licence.

  • The Beech
    Beech Road, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester 21. Tel: 0161-881 1180.
Voted City Life Pub of the Year in 1983, this pub offers an impressive selection of beers served in top condition. No food, smoky, and no fuss.

  • The Metropolitan
2 Lapwing Lane, West Didsbury, Manchester M20. Tel: 0161-374 9559.
Open Mon-Sat from 11.30am - 11.00pm and on Sunday from 12noon - 10.30pm. Real ales available, including Timothy Taylor's, Tetleys and Boddingtons. A conversion from the old Midland pub without the usual fake antique décor and props. Good food available and adequate wine list, if rather expensive.

  • Scruffy Murphy's
    256 Wilmslow Road, Fallowfield,
    Manchester 14. Tel: 0161-256 0012.
One of two Scruffy Murphy's in Manchester, and both are close to the student campus of Manchester University. A wide selection of bottled beers, including Guinness. Food available.

  • The Welcome Inn
Rusholme Grove, Rusholme, Manchester M14. Tel: 0161-224 4306.
Tetleys and Stones bitters available. Hidden behind Rusholme's Wilmslow Road so-called "curry mile", this traditional old pub was formerly the haunt of BBC personnel (whose studios were once around the corner in Dickenson Road) and of the wrestling fraternity as it was once owned by the Sinclair's, one-time champion wrestling family, before their retirement to Tenerife.

  • Osbourne House Inn
    32 Victory Street, Rusholme, Manchester M14. Tel: 0161-224 9534.
Hydes bitter and mild ales available. A friendly pub, recently refurbished and rather busy as a Manchester City Football Club fan's meeting place on match days.
