firms staffed by 6,500 people make Manchester one of the most
important and competitive business services centres outside London.
Each of the big six firms (KPMG Peat Marwick, Arthur Andersen,
Coopers & Lybrand, Ernst & Young, Price Waterhouse and Touche
Ross) is represented in the city and their combined fee income
in the North West in 2001 amounted to over £167 million. Alongside
audit and tax facilities, most offer business services such as
diagnostic reports and recruitment and management consultancy.
The big six were conducting an increasing amount of international
business through their world-wide network of offices. Besides
offering international financial and taxation advice, they are
identifying business opportunities both in the North West for
foreign-owned companies, and overseas for regionally based clients.
In addition there are a number of locally based practices who
are increasingly challenging the dominance of the national firms
in the small and mid corporate sector. One such firm, Latham Crossley
& Davis with fee income in excess of £7 million, was recently
ranked by the Financial Times as the fastest-growing accountancy
firm in the top 30 UK companies.
With over
40 percent of regional advertising in the UK placed through its
agencies, Manchester is a major centre for advertising. An impressive
roll-call of major brands is handled from the city, including
Airtours, Kwik Save, Wellcome, Next and Proton Cars. Manchester's
advertising scene is dominated by three companies - McCann Erickson,
J Walter Thompson and BDH - whose combined billings of £132 million
add up to more than the total billings of the rest of the country's
regional agencies. McCann Erickson runs international accounts
for Coca-Cola and SmithKline Beecham while J Walter Thompson's
international roster includes Canadian communications company
Northern Telecom. BDH meanwhile has Henkel and large regional
advertisers including Manchester Airport. Manchester's smaller
agencies consider themselves the equal of the bigger companies,
and with the appointment of new business development directors,
will continue to snap at their heels. Media buying in the North
West is also dominated by Manchester companies. TMD, the largest
media-buying consultancy outside London and part of the French-owned
Carat group, CIA Media Solutions and Paul Gage Media are all geared
up for even more new business as smaller advertising agencies
move away from having their own media departments. These agencies
predict an increasing demand for specialist research from their
clients. Alongside its more glamorous consumer advertising agencies,
Manchester has always had a strong business-to-business sector,
built on the back of the region's traditional industrial base
and a different approach to their work. Campaign (the advertising
industry's magazine) places two of its top ten agencies in the
North West - CAS and IAS - with clients such as Fisons, British
Steel, Leyland Daf and Zeneca.
