Manchester Listed Buildings & Ancient Monuments

Certain Manchester buildings are regarded as so important that they form an essential part of our cultural heritage and need to be preserved for posterity. Listing means that they cannot be demolished or substantially altered, either internally or externally, without permission, and all maintenance must be carried out according to strict guidelines set to maintain the authenticity of period styling.
All listed buildings, whatever their grade, are of special architectural or historic importance in a national context. Grade I and II* are the very best examples. The historic interest can apply to buildings of any grade, though the criteria for this are quite strict.
All are protected in the same way - English Heritage
(http://www.english-heritage.org.uk) are consulted on proposed changes to Grade I and II* buildings, whereas Grade II buildings are dealt with by local authorities unless demolition or partial demolition is involved, in which case English Heritage, and other interested bodies, are consulted.

Listed buildings are graded to show their relative importance:

• Grade I buildings are those of exceptional interest;
• Grade II* are particularly important buildings of more than special interest;
• Grade II are of special interest, warranting every effort to preserve them.

As a general guideline buildings should be listed if they fall into the following categories:

• Any building dated before 1700 should be listed;
• Most buildings dated between 1700 and 1840 may be listed;
• Buildings of evident quality dated between 1840 and 1914 especially those by principal architects;
• Important buildings of high quality between 1914 and 1939.
• Any building of special historical interest.
