The northwest region has virtually dominated the game of Rugby in Great Britain in recent years. Rugby Union and Rugby League Football operate different rules - there are as many similarities between them as their are differences, and proponents of both systems regard theirs as the best and the truest form of the game.

Needless to say, rivalries run high and the game is tough, rough and highly competitive. Games usually take place on Saturdays (and sometimes, more recently, on Sundays).
