What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy, (or simply physical therapy)
assesses and provides treatment to maintain and restore maximum movement
and function especially when they have been or are impaired by aging,
injury, disease or environmental factors.

It is largely to do with identifying
and maximising quality of life and movement by promotion, prevention,
treatment, intervention and rehabilitation, and includes treatments
to maintain physical, psychological, emotional, and social well being.

Physical therapy is carried out
after a physical examination and diagnosis and its many specialties
include a wide range of disciplines, such as cardiopulmonary, geriatrics,
neurological, orthopaedic and pediatrics.

Commonly, physiotherapists work
from outpatient clinics, skilled nursing facilities, extended care facilities,
private homes, education and research centres, schools, hospices, industrial
workplaces or other occupational environments, fitness centres and sports
training facilities.

For more information on the work
of physiotherapists, see the website of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists
