Hotels & Guest Houses in the English Lake District National Park
Windermere is possibly the most well known and most visited place in the entire Lake District National Park, and, as one might expect, it is blessed with more than its share of hotels and guest houses offering overnight, short or long stay accommodation to the visitor.
Smaller and more personal family-run establishments are common, like Laurel Cottage in Park Road. This is a 5 bedroom Victorian guest house close to the amenities of Windermere Village where there is a good selection of restaurants, bars, cafes and shops all within a few minutes walk. Or Ivy Bank in Holly Road, a pretty Victorian house built in the distinctive local grey Lakeland slate that is typical of the region. Its 5 bedrooms are en-suite and are provided with all the customary facilities as well as off-road parking and safe storage for bikes and membership of a local leisure club including free use of most of the facilities, such as – swimming pool, sauna, steam room, spa-bath, gym, badminton and snooker. Glenville House is another traditionally built 7 bedroom Victorian house set in its own gardens backed by a stream and woodland, and is situated a short walk from both the centres of Windermere and Bowness on Windermere.
Medium size hotels are less common, though there is the Craig Manor Hotel on Lake Road, with its 25 bedrooms. This 3 star rated hotel is located on a hill overlooking Lake Windermere, the Langdale Pikes and surrounding mountains in the English Lake District. Just a short stroll from the front door is the village of Bowness with its pubs, shops, cafes and museum. Guests can walk to the lake shore and maybe take a cruise to nearby Ambleside.
Briery Wood Hotel
There is also the Briery Wood Hotel on Ambleside Road, a 23 bedroom, 2 star hotel, located near the lake and set in 7 acres of secluded gardens and woodland. It offers rooms with garden views, all en-suite The dining room, it says “…offers superb country house cuisine. The Woodlands Hotel is a handsome Edwardian villa located on the peaceful side of the village. It offers guests comfortable bed and breakfast accommodation in truly charming surroundings. The 15 guest rooms, include a choice of single, double and twin rooms. Applegarth Hotel & JR’s Restaurant are located in an impressive Victorian mansion house situated in a quiet street close to the heart of Windermere village. It has just 18 “… individually designed
luxury bedrooms all with stylish ensuite facilities and stunning views towards the fells and Lake Windermere from many of our four-poster rooms”.
For those preferring the conviviality of an English pub environment, there is The Angel Inn, located in a village centre location, set in own gardens, 2 minute walk to Lake Windermere, shops, pubs, restaurants Boasting superb lake views, hospitality, food and service. This 2 star rated 11 bedroom inn has undergone major refurbishment but retains the old features of the 18th century building. Food is served served all day, freshly prepared by award winning chefs.
