Hotels, Guest Houses and B&B in
Bowness

Accommodation in the English Lake
District National Park

The two separate villages of Bowness
on Windermere and Windermere are popular with tourists looking for
hotel or guest house accommodation and there is plenty on offer. Bowness,
however, with its immediate Lakeside location tends to be most favoured
by tourists, weekenders and day-trippers. While several large hotels
dominate the lakeside, it is the small bed and breakfast guest houses,
usually family run affairs, which vastly outnumber them and which
in the main take the lion’s share of Lake District accommodation bookings,
by virtue of their sheer number.

Places like Lingwood Lodge in Bowness
are typical; located in a quiet spot but within 400 yards of lake,
the steamer pier, shops and restaurants. Similarly, Lowfell Country
House Hotel, described by ‘The American Traveller Magazine’ in 2005
as “… a rather pukka Bed and Breakfast
in a splendid part of the beautiful English Lake District. Simply
one of the nicest B&B’s we’ve discovered this side of the Atlantic…
great location, lovely house, delicious breakfasts, heavenly beds
– and really nice people…”
. This wonderful turn of
the century Lakeland stone house is completely private and set in
an acre of secluded garden, nestled behind a high stone wall and surrounded
by mature trees and shrubs.

The larger Belsfield Hotel, part of
the Corus Hotel chain, is set in six acres of garden overlooking
Lake Windermere and the Cumbrian Hills beyond. Built in Victorian
times, this 3 star, 64 bedroom hotel is central for many local attractions
such as lake cruises, the Beatrix Potter Museum, The Steamboat Museum
and a variety of local shops. Its restaurant serves lunch and dinner
every day overlooking the lake and afternoon teas can be taken on
the lawns or in one of the lounges.

There are numerous small guest houses.
One, simply known as “Number 80” is an elegant 4 bedroom
Lakeland guest house in Bowness; it was recently refurbished with
stylish modern interiors. Set in a quiet location, just 2 minutes
walk to shops and restaurants, and claims “..Hotel style at B&B
prices!”. Similarly small and cosy is Elim Lodge, a six bedroom
B&B guest house located in a quiet street very close to Bowness
shops and restaurants. It boasts “..great
cooked breakfasts using award winning local ingredients”
.
Families and small groups are welcome and there is free membership
of local Leisure Club. Or Westbury House, a small 5 bedroom guest
house, ideally situated in a quiet road 2 minutes from the centre
of Windermere village.

The Linthwaite House Hotel in Bowness
is an award winning 3 AA red star 27 bedroom hotel, (one the AA’s
Top 200 Hotels) and is set on a hilltop location, overlooking the
lake and mountains. Set amid 14 acres of beautiful gardens. All rooms
en-suite some with lake views. Located close to all the major heritage
attractions such as Hilltop (home of Beatrix Potter) and Dove Cottage
(home of William Wordsworth).

A more traditional pub atmosphere is
provided by the Wild Boar Hotel in Windermere; it has
36 bedrooms, log fires, oak beams, antique furniture, and has in its
time been voted one of the most romantic 3 star hotels in England,
surrounded by open countryside and many interesting walks. Full use
of its sister hotel (Low Wood) Leisure Club, including its 50ft pool,
beauty salon and watersports centre.

There are far too many residences available
in the townships to cover in one short web page, but by clicking on
