Ambleside is a major town on the shores of Lake Windermere and a Mecca for walkers, ramblers, mountaineers

Larger accommodation also plentiful, including the 3 star Langdale Hotel & Country Club whose 57 rooms make it the ideal choice for getting away from it all. The Hotel has two distinctly styled restaurants and its own traditional Lakeland
pub, a health and beauty salon and an exclusive Country Club. As you might expect, all amenities and facilities are available. Another large hotel is The 4 star rated Waterhead Hotel which underwent a recent £2.7 million refurbishment and extension. This hotel offers the most contemporary and luxurious of surroundings. Its 41 bedrooms are well equipped, including CD/DVD players and flat screen TVs in all bedrooms. A relaxed setting with views over Waterhead Bay with its backdrop of Wetherlam fell and Coniston Old Man. Guests get complimentary membership of the nearby Low Wood Leisure Club whose facilities include an indoor pool, sauna, solarium, gym and beauty treatments.

Then there is the Best Western Ambleside Salutation Hotel which has a village centre location, boasting breathtaking views. This 17th Century hotel has 42 en-suite bedrooms, with facilities including power shower and bath, television with satellite channels, direct dial telephone with modem facility, refreshments tray, trouser press and hairdryer. Despite its several large hotels, the area is mostly served by small family run bed and breakfast guest houses in their distinctive grey Lakeland stone.Typical is Rothay Manor Hotel, a small 3 star guest house establishment with just 18 bedrooms, set in its own landscaped gardens and located just ¼ mile from Lake Windermere and from the centre of Ambleside, it is an ideal base for walking or sightseeing.
