Major Hotel Chains in Manchester city centre
range from the 5 star Radisson Edwardian and the Lowry Hotels
to more modestly facilitated and priced hotels like the Britannia,
Britannia Sachas and the Malmaison Hotels in the 3 star rated
classification. Many are in historic buildings, like the Palace
Hotel, located in the iconic former Refuge Assurance Building
in Oxford Street or the Midland Hotel in Princess Street, where
Rolls and Royce made their first meeting before setting up their
first car manufacturing factory in the nearby suburb of Hulme.
The Edwardian Hotel is also typical, located within a celebrated
building, the former Free Trade Hall in Peter Street, site of
and monument to the bloody Peterloo Massacre of 1819 and Manchester’s
19th century struggle for city status and parliamentary representation
through the Chartist Movement.

There are also newer hotels like the
Crown Plaza, the Park Inn, the MacDonald Manchester, Novotel,
the Ramada Renaissance and the Hilton Hotel Deansgate. The Hilton
is situated within the lower 23 floors of the 50 storey Beetham
Tower, a landmark hotel offering spectacular views across the
city and easy access to Manchester’s commercial and shopping
areas. All these hotels offer the full panoply of facilities
you might expect of city centre hotels in the 3 to 5 star price
range.

Budget Hotels like the Ibis Hotel in
Portland Street, the Aurora in princess Street, the Gardens
Hotel in Piccadilly and Jurys Inn in Great Bridgewater Street
are also to be found within the city centre – all priced so
as not to break the bank and still offering a degree of comfort
and location, but with possibly fewer luxuries as the more expensive
hotels. Located within the Urban Heritage Site of Castlefield
is the Castlefield Hotel, adjacent to the YMCA and opposite
the Museum of Science & Industry in Liverpool Road.

Though technically not in Manchester,
on the other side of the River Irwell is the top class Lowry
Hotel, part of the Rocco Forte chain, and named in honour of
Salford’s most celebrated artist L S Lowry. It boasts that
“…
the Charles Forte Suite is the most luxurious and the most prestigious
suite in Greater Manchester”.

A little further out, at Salford Quays, is the Copthorne Hotel,
a high class establishment located at the waterside in the popular
Quays development, which were once the Manchester Docks.

Salford also has the Stay Inn and the
Campanile Hotels both just a short step or two outside Manchester
city centre in Salford. A less sought after location, which
is reflected in their rates, but both conveniently located close
to the M602 Motorway and handy for a one night business stopover.

Most of the larger hotels also offer
good facilities for meetings and conventions. The Midland Hotel,
for example, adjacent to the Manchester Central Convention Centre
was almost entirely taken over by the Conservative Party when
their Annual Party Conference was held in Manchester in 2012.
The Lowry has flexible meeting and event space for up to 400
people. Britannia Sachas’ United States Suite is a banqueting
and conference facility which can cater for up to 750 persons
by combining three other conference rooms. Practically all have
on-site restaurants and bars, major hotels often boast two or
three, but the city centre has many restaurants and all sorts
of cuisines on offer so that even those without restaurants
are never located far from a nearby eatery.A

pockets and tastes. To search for your ideal accommodation in
