Murals in Manchester Town Hall

wall panels by the artist Ford Madox Brown were commissioned by the
city fathers to illustrate notable events and important persons who
contributed to the development and the history of Manchester since its
beginning in Roman times. They were commissioned to decorate the Great
Hall in the prestigious new town hall, which was to be a tangible and
visible symbol of Manchester’s emerging power as an industrial city
and of the civic pride which its people felt in its achievements. This
small selection of photographs eminently demonstrates Madox Brown’s

Town Hall is open to visitors and there are Blue Badge guides available
for a 1½ to 2 hour
guided tour of the building – well worth a visit – highly recommended.
