Local Artist - Gary Cartwright
The Artist

Self taught artist Gary Cartwright was born
in Stockport in 1963,
one of 10 children.

He lost both his parents at an early age
most of his paintings are influenced by his own life experiences
and news headlines.

Positive Nation , a London-based Magazine,
described him in a feature article as “Manchester’s own
popular Brit artist”.

His works are both thought-provoking and
dramatic! Each painting tells the viewer its own story.

He currently has works in the Manchester
Jewish Museum
in Cheetham Hill as well as Greater Manchester
Police Museum collections, along with many works in private
collections across the north of England.

He has held solo exhibitions in Europe and
been featured in many publications.

Some of his work has been considered controversial
and shocking and has even been linked with the likes of Damien
Hirst and Lucien Freud.

At present he stands at the forefront of
Manchester Brit Art and is fast becoming one of the most talked
about artists in the region, and his work is now becoming highly
sought after by collectors in Britain and Europe. .

One of Gary’s main passions is helping local
charities to raise funds by donating either paintings for auction
or by giving a percentage of sales from his exhibitions to various
local charities.

These include the Terrence Higgins Trust,
the George House Trust Children’s Fund in Manchester, the Peoples
Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA), and the Christie Hospital.

The Manchester Evening News described
him as a ‘modern day icon’ after the “Icons” exhibition
in aid of children suffering from AIDS. He is also featured

One of his most infamous paintings is ‘KILLER’
(bottom left) featuring the harrowing image of moors murderer
Myra Hindley.

He has also just recently won artist of the
month for September and October 2002 via the www.paintingsandprints2
art site.
