Playa
de Las Americas, Costa Adeje
The
Playa de Las Américas is a purpose-built holiday
resort in the northern part of the Municipality of Arona,
close to the adjoining town of Adeje.. It was built in
the 1960s beside the town of Los Cristianos and stretching
northward to the Costa Adeje. The resort area features
bars, night-clubs, restaurants, attractions, and beaches,
most of which are man-made from imported sand from Africa
due to the darkness of the native volcanic sand. Playa
de Las Americas is a centre of nightlife in Tenerife.
Its main road is Las Americas Avenue, full of shops to
suit all price ranges. It is sunny all year through. The
town's Veronicas Strip includes bars and clubs over three
floors in five buildings, though many other bars and clubs
can be found in this area. It has a reputation of being
very boisterous, particularly during early morning hours
with over-expressive partygoers!.

Santa
Cruz de Tenerife
Santa
Cruz de Tenerife (commonly known as Santa Cruz) is jointly
the capital with Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, second-most
populous city in the Canary Islands and is home to the
Canary Islands Parliament. Its harbour is one of Spain's
busiest; it comprises three sectors. It is important for
commercial and passenger traffic, as well as for being
a major stopover for cruisers en route from Europe to
the Caribbean. The Santa Cruz harbour is one of the busiest
in Spain; three quays host regular ferries, fast ferries,
cruise ships and merchant ships.

Los
Cristianos
Los
Cristianos is on the south coast of the island around Los
Cristianos Bay It is rapidly expanding inland with modern
development due to its popularity as a tourist resort and
ferry port. Formerly a quiet fishing village the town nowadays
is a major holiday destination, with two golden sand beaches,
a multitude of bars and restaurants and its year round sunny
climate. There is a wealth of accommodation to suit all
budgets, including hotels, self catering apartments and
timeshare resorts. There are also excursions from the port
including dolphin and whale watching, fishing trips and
party cruises. A
number of large hotels and apartment blocks were built during
the 1970s to accommodate the growing number of tourists
and in the 1980s the town began a massive expansion when
Los Cristianos began to attract a number of British expatriates
who emigrated either permanently or semi-permanently to
escape the cold British winters. As English is as widely
spoken as Spanish, there are also a number of British owned
bars, restaurants, shops and services aimed predominantly
at the tourist sector. Los Cristianos is home to two world-class
beaches: The main beach (Playa de Los Cristianos) is a sandy
beach sheltered by the Harbour and boasts a number of facilities
including watersports, beach volley ball, showers and a
children's play area. Las Vistas Beach is located in the
next bay beyond the harbour and is man-made, protected by
breakwaters, it also boasts a number of facilities including
watersports, showers and a tourist information site.

Puerto
de la Cruz
Puerto
de la Cruz, (or simply 'Puerto') is located on the north
coast of Tenerife in the Orotava Valley about 16 miles
from Tenerife North Airport. Prior to the development
of hotels and holiday accommodation, much of the area
consisted of agricultural land, but of late this has shifted
from rural to urban and tourism. Tourism is an important
industry in Puerto de la Cruz, as evidenced by the number
of large hotels on the skyline. The resort is frequented
predominantly by the British and northern Europeans during
the winter months due to its mild climate, and is particularly
popular over Christmas and the New Year periods, appealing
particularly to more mature couples, in comparison to
resorts such as Playa de Las Americas. Puerto also has
a modest gay scene centred around Generalisimo Avenue.
The summer months sees more Spanish tourists, escaping
the very hot month of August on the Spanish mainland.

La
Caleta, Costa Adeje
In
recent times coastal development on the Costa Adeje has
spread northwards from Playa de Las Americas and now encompasses
the former small enclave of La Caleta, which has become
a major tourist destination. Adeje and the surrounding
area is a major tourist hot spot with many coastal resorts
nearby on the coast, the Costa Adeje, which also connects
to nearby Playa de Las Américas, Playa Paraiso,
La Caleta and Callao Salvaje. Although the region's main
economy was traditionally business and agriculture and
continued to be so until the 1990s, tourism has now become
its major source of income.
