Holiday Hotels, Villas & Apartments in Menorca
(Minorca)
Spanish Balearic Islands
About
Menorca
Plentiful
sunny hotels, apartments and other holiday accommodation on
the island of Menorca make it an ever popular holiday destination
with British holidaymakers. Menorca is, along with the neighbouring
islands of Ibiza and Majorca (Mallorca), part of the Spanish
Balearic Islands ('Islas Baleares'). It is located off the
south east coast of mainland Spain in the Mediterranean Sea.
Travel time by aeroplane from UK airports is around 2 to 2½
hours and the island is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time,
typical of most continental European countries. Because of
its Mediterranean climate it enjoys more-or-less guaranteed
sunshine and warm temperatures throughout a long summer season,
caters well for and is very popular with the British.

Ciudadella
(Ciutadela)
Ciudadella
de Menorca is a town and a municipality in the western
end of Minorca. Its name means, simply, "citadel"
and it is one of the two main cities in the island. The
old part of the town is well worth a visit, its town hall
having been the former palace of the Arab governor and
later served as a royal palace under the Aragonese and
again as a governor's palace until the British moved the
capital to the eastern town of Mahon. In the 17th century
many civil and religious buildings were built in the Italian
style there and give Ciudadella a historical and artistic
unity.

Cala
Galdana, Ferreries
Cala
Galdana is a fine sandy cove located on the south coast
of Menorca in the municipality of Ferreries and is one
of the island's most beautiful coves, marked by its crystal
clear waters.

Fornells
Fornells
(also known as Fournella) is a village located in a bay
in the north of the island of Minorca. Fornells is estimated
to have a population of only about 1000 people but this
number increases dramatically in the summer because of
its popularity as a tourist destination. Fornells Bay
is deep, measuring around 3 miles long and 1½ wide.
Its natural harbour is filled with traditional Minorcan
fishing craft, used for fishing lobsters.

Mahon
Mahón
(the Catalan name Maó is the official form, and
often known as Port Mahon in English) is a municipality
and the capital city of Minorca and is located in the
eastern part of the island. Mahon has the second deepest
natural harbour in the world, just over 3 miles long and
over a half mile wide with deep clear waters. Today it
serves as the seat of the Island Council of Minorca (Consell
Insular de Menorca). Towards the end of the 20th century,
a refurbishment of its historic centre was made possible
by income from tourism and it contains many notable examples
of fine architecture.
