Malta is a
densely populated developed European island country in the European
Union. The island nation comprises an archipelago of seven islands
situated in the Southern European areas of the Mediterranean Sea,
93 km off the coast of Sicily 288 km east of Tunisia and 300 km
north of Libya. The islands enjoy a Mediterranean climate. Throughout
its history, Malta's location in the Mediterranean Sea has given
it a strategic importance. Consequently, a sequence of powers
including the Phoenicians, Romans, Fatimids, Sicilians, Knights
of St John, French and British have all conquered Malta. Malta
gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1964 and became
a Republic in 1974 but remains a member of the Commonwealth of
Nations. It is a member of the European Union, which it joined
in 2004, and also of the United Nations. Malta is known for its
world heritage sites, most prominently the Megalithic Temples
which are the oldest free-standing structures on Earth. According
to the Acts of the Apostles, St. Paul was shipwrecked on the island.
Malta is also considered a hypothetical location for the mythical
lost island of Atlantis. Malta's capital city is Valletta. The
country's official languages are Maltese and English, which replaced
Italian in 1934. Malta has a long legacy of Roman Catholicism,
which continues to be the official and dominant religion in Malta.
A popular tourist destination with the British for its warm climate
and the widespread use of the English language.

St Julian's
St
Julian's coastline is thronged with tourists during the peak summer
months. From Qui-si-Sana in Sliema to Balluta Bay in St Julian's,
it is one long stretch of rocky shore, steps and handrails placed
every so often allow easy access to the water and there are plenty
of flat rocks to spread a towel on. The sea here is deep, but generally
clean, clear and safe to swim and is also excellent for snorkelling.
Some hotels along the front, especially at the St Julian's end,
provide beach concessions equipped with pools, water sports and
lido areas for nightlife. The favourite beaches are: the Tigne',
Qui si-Sana, Ghar id-Dud, the Exiles and Fond Ghadir. A recent major
improvement on the previous tiny patch of sand that used to be St
Georges Bay has made this beach larger and is less than a
minutes walk from the restaurants and cafes at St. Julian's.

Valletta
Valletta is
the capital of Malta and is located in the central-eastern part
of the island. Its peninsula has two natural harbours, Marsamxett
and the island's major port, Grand Harbour. The magnificent fortress
city grew on the arid rock of Mount Sceberras peninsula, which
rises steeply from two harbours. The city is busy by day, yet
retains a timeless atmosphere. The narrow side streets boast some
of Europe's finest artworks, churches and palaces, whilst Vallettas
main streets are lined with larger international branded shops
for fashion, music, jewellery and much more.

Sliema
Sliema
is located on the north-east coast of Malta and was once a quiet
fishing village on the peninsula across Marsamxett Harbour from
Valletta. Its coastline, up to neighbouring St Julian's is one long
stretch of rocky shore, but has not prevented the resort from being
popular with tourists. It is also a major shopping centre with many
restaurants, cafés and hotels.

St Paul's Bay
Saint Paul's
Bay is situated in the north-east of the island and approximately
10 miles from Valletta. It was once just a small fishing village
but is now one of the island's largest seaside resorts, along
with its neighbouring towns of Bugibba and Qawra. The flat rocks
provide places for sun bathing and there are access points every
so often for swimmers; the water is deep, but generally clean,
clear and safe for bathing. The promenade leading from St Paul's
Bay stretches all the way to Qawra Point, with its tower and panoramic
views over Salina Bay.

Gozo
Gozo is a
small island of the Maltese archipelago located nearby in the
Mediterranean Sea. Steeped in myth, it is thought to be the legendary
Calypso's isle of Homer's Odyssey, and is a peaceful,
mystical backwater. Baroque churches and old stone farmhouses
dot the countryside. Its rugged landscape and spectacular coastline
await exploration with reputedly some of the Mediterranean's best
dive sites. Its finest beaches are said to be at San Blas and
Ramla Bay, with red sand and clear turquoise waters. Currently
the island is reachable by ferry boat and by seaplane.
