Northern
Ireland, (Ulster), is part of the United Kingdom, though
it has its own devolved government at Stormont Castle. It
is situated in the north-east of the island of Ireland and
shares a border with the Republic of Ireland to the south
and west. In 2001 its population was 1,685,000, constituting
between a quarter and a third of the island's total population
and about 3% of the population of the UK. Northern
Ireland consists of six of the traditional nine counties
of the historic Irish province of Ulster - County Antrim,
County Armagh, County Down, County Fermanagh, County Londonderry
and County Tyrone. It was for many years the site of a violent
and bitter ethno-political conflict ("The Troubles")
between those claiming to represent Nationalists, who are
predominantly Roman Catholic, and those claiming to represent
Unionists, who are predominantly Protestant. Unionists wanted
Northern Ireland to remain part of the United Kingdom, while
nationalists wished it to be politically united with the
rest of Ireland. In general, Unionists consider themselves
British (or "Ulstermen") and Nationalists see
themselves as Irish, though these identities are not necessarily
mutually exclusive. Since the signing of the Belfast Agreement
(or "Good Friday Agreement") in 1998, most of
the paramilitary groups involved in the Troubles have ceased
their armed campaigns, and sit around the table as equal
members of the Parliament. More recently the economy has
benefited from major investment by many large multi-national
corporations into high tech industry, though the largest
employer in the country is still the Government.
