Provence
is a region of south-eastern France on the Mediterranean
Sea adjacent to Italy. It is part of the administrative
region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The traditional
region of Provence comprises the departments of Var, Vaucluse,
and Bouches-du-Rhône and parts of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence
and Alpes-Maritimes. Provence is so named because it was
the first Roman province (hence 'Provence') outside of Italy.
Famed for the French Riviera towns of St Tropez and Cannes,
for the Palace of the Popes in Avignon, the perfumes of
Grasse, and a Mecca for Post-Impressionist painters like
Van Gogh and Gauguin. Also famous for its noble wines, sandy
