Poitou-Charentes
is an administrative region in central western France comprising
four departments: Charente, Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sèvres
and Vienne. Poitiers, the former capital of the region, is
its chief city, although the port of La Rochelle rivals it
in economic importance. Three regional languages, Poitevin,
Saintongeais and Limousin are spoken by a minority of people
in the region. Most of the original French settlers of Canada
came from the region around Poitiers in the 17th and 18th
centuries. Its main economy is based around wheat and cattle
