Midi-Pyrénées
is the largest region of metropolitan France by area, larger
than the Netherlands or Denmark. Midi-Pyrénées
has no historical or geographical unity. It is one of the
regions of France created artificially in the late 20th century
to serve as a hinterland and zone of influence for its capital,
Toulouse. The region is composed of eight departments: Ariège,
Aveyron, Gers, Haute-Garonne, Hautes-Pyrénées,
Lot, Tarn and Tarn-et-Garonne and about one-quarter of the
region has long been known as Gascony. Midi-Pyrénées
has six UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The region has one National
Nature Park, the Pyrénées, and three Regional
Nature Parks. It is the land of the Cathars and Knights Templars,
as well as the so-called "bastides" (those famous
mediaeval fortified villages). Many local gastronomic specialities
including Casseolet, numerous seasonal festivals and traditional
celebrations. Source:
