The
Ile-de-France
(literally translated "Island of France")
is one of the 26 administrative regions of France, comprised
mostly of the Paris metropolitan area which was created as
the "District of the Paris Region" in 1960. It was
renamed as the "Île-de-France" region in 1976.
However, French people have traditionally referred to it as
the "Région Parisienne" (Paris Region) or
just simply "RP". Most of the region is covered
by the Paris metropolitan area. With
over 11½ million inhabitants it is the most populated
region of France. Ile-de-France is composed of eight departments
centered around its innermost department and capital, Paris.
Immediately surrounding Paris is the first of two concentric
rings which include three departments commonly known as the
petite couronne ("small ring") - these include les
Hauts-de-Seine, la Seine-Saint-Denis and le Val-de-Marne.
The second, or outer ring comprises four departments known,
as the grande couronne ("large ring") - these
include Val d'Oise, Yvelines, Essonne and the Seine &
Marne.
