The Region of Champagne-Ardennes, in the north-east of France,
consists of four departments: Aube, Ardennes, Haute-Marne,
and Marne. Its rivers, all of which flow west, include the
Seine, the Marne, and the Aisne. More than 60% of its land
is dedicated to agriculture, notably for its famous Ardennes
Paté and its celebrated champagnes. The actual ‘region’
designated for the production of champagne, also includes
parts of the adjoining departments of Yonne in Burgundy,
Aisne in Picardie, Seine-et-Marne in Ile-de-France and Meuse
in Lorraine. The old French province of Champagne roughly
covered this same area. Popular tourist destinations in
the region include Troyes and its ancient houses, Langres
and its ancient walls, as well as Épernay, Reims
and Colombey-les-deux-Églises, burial place of President
General Charles DeGaulle.
