Centre
is one of the 26 regions of France, located towards the
northwest of the actual centre of the country. Its capital
is Orléans, although its largest city is Tours. The
main feature of the region is the Loire Valley. It includes
the rich, fertile valleys of the Loire River and its tributaries,
notably the Cher, Indre and Loiret. The famous chateaux
of the Loire Valley and expansive vineyards attract many
tourists to the region. Controversially, because it is not
quite in the geographical centre of France, there have been
several proposals to change the region's name - "Val
de Loire" being the most favoured, (though not yet
adopted). Many compromise and call it "Centre - Val
de Loire", not to be confused with "Pays de la
Loire", it being the region to its immediate west.
