Corsica
(or in French "La Corse") is the fourth
largest island in the Mediterranean Sea after Sicily,
Sardinia, and Cyprus. It is located west of Italy,
southeast of the French mainland, and north of the
island of Sardinia. Corsica is one of the 26 regions
of France, although strictly speaking Corsica is designated
as a "territorial collectivity" (collectivité
territoriale) by law. As a territorial collectivity,
it enjoys greater powers than other French regions,
but for the most part its status is quite similar.
Although the island is separated from the continental
mainland by the Ligurian Sea and is much closer to
the Italian than to the French mainland, politically
Corsica is part of Metropolitan France. It was once
briefly an independent Corsican Republic, until being
incorporated into France in 1768. Corsica is famed
as the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. His ancestral
home, Casa Buonaparte, is located there. The island
is the least economically developed region in Metropolitan
France and tourism plays a major role in the Corsican
economy. The island's climate, mountains and coastlines
make it a popular destination among the French and
other Western Europeans. However, the island has not
had the same level of intensive development as other
parts of the Mediterranean and is thus relatively
unspoiled. Tourism is particularly concentrated in
the area around Porto Vecchio and Bonifacio in the
south of the island and Calvi in the northwest. Source:

Corte
Corte
is a small town in the heart of Corsica set on a rocky
outcrop above the Tavignano Valley. The town itself is
quite small and is easily explored, as all paths appear
to lead to the one main street. Much of its appeal to
tourists is its scenery with excellent views of the surrounding
mountains and valleys. The region falls within the Corsica
Natural Park and is popular for walks and hiking. The
main place of interest in Corte is the citadel, which
includes the Museum of Corsica, which is perched high
on a craggy rock, and can be reached by narrow, steep
streets.

Ajaccio
Ajaccio
is situated on the west coast and occupies a sheltered
position at the foot of wooded hills on the northern shore
of the Gulf of Ajaccio. This combination means that it
remains mild even during the winter months, therefore
the town is popular with tourists for much of the year
due to its fine climate and sheltered position. Napoleon
Bonaparte was born in Ajaccio and the house where he was
born is now the National Buonaparte Museum. There are
a large number of cafés, bars and restaurants in
the town. The old town, around Place Marechal Foch, has
narrow streets lined with attractive, typically Mediterranean
houses and is very picturesque.

L'Ile Rousse
L'Ile
Rousse is situated on the nothwest coast of Corsica, about
12 miles northeast of Calvi, at the northern edge of the
Balagne region. It has a fine beach to the south at Plage
de Rindara, and small rocky islands to the north. L'Ile-Rousse
has a planned layout of straight streets, lined with expensive
boutiques and restaurants.

Lucciana
Situated
on the eastern coast of Corsica nearly 12 miles to the
south of Bastia, the commune extends to the mountainous
summit as far as the La Marana Lagoon bordering the Tyrrhenian
Sea. The village is built on a rocky outcrop at the foot
of the northern flank of the Agolaja, a hill 526 metres
high. The international airport of Bastia-Poretta is situated
in the region. It is also an important road junction on
the RN193 (Ajaccio to Bastia ) and RN198 (Bastia to Bonifacio)
highways. The Cathedral of the Canonica is a Romanesque
11th century building, renovated and dedicated to the
Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It features a statue of
the Corsican patron Saint Devota and a bronze figure of
Christ by Sei Dominici. The local archeological site of
Mariana has excavations which are open to the public.

Calvi
The
port town of Calvi, in the Balagne region of northwest
Corsica, boasts traditional Corsican culture while effortlessly
maintaining the comforts of a modern resort area. Its
local beach is a long, narrow strip of white sand and
shallow water that stretches nearly four miles along the
length of the bay. Popular activities at this beach include
windsurfing, water-skiing, jet-skiing and paragliding.
A less populated and wider strip of beach can be found
at Plage de lAlga, near Revellata Point. Quai Landry
is a popular beachside walkway, which connects the port
to the marina, and offers restaurants, bars, cafés,
shops and hotels.

Bonifacio
Bonifacio
is at the southern tip of Corsica, just 8 miles from the
neighbouring island of Sardinia, which gives the harbour
a rather exclusive, sophisticated Italian feel, with palm
trees and expensive restaurants lining the quay. The town
is a major centre for sea-based leisure activities such
as yachting and diving. The medieval old town of Bonifacio
is the oldest town in Corsica, located above a natural
harbour on the site of a 9th century citadel, on a white
limestone peninsula, with many tall houses along cobbled
streets in a spectacular setting along the clifftop. Places
of interest include the 'Staircase of the King of Aragon',
(cut into the stone), a monument to the dead and a few
attractive churches amongst the medieval buildings.

Porto-Vecchio
Porto-Vecchio
is situated on the southeastern coast of Corsica. It is
a town built on salt marshes and salt continues to play
an important role in the town. It is the renowned beaches
and coastline to the south of the town that are one the
main attractions, but the town itself also has an attractive
marina with cafes and restaurants overlooking the harbour.
