Bulgaria
has recently grown into a popular holiday destination for British
tourists with an increasing number of hotels, apartments and other
accommodation. Part of the Balkans in south-eastern Europe, it
borders five other countries: Romania to the north (separated
by the River Danube), Serbia and Macedonia to the west, and Greece
and Turkey to the south with the Black Sea to the east. It includes
parts of the old Roman provinces of Moesia, Thrace and Macedonia.
After a history bound by numerous invasions and political subdivisions,
Bulgaria declared her independence from the Ottoman Empire in
1908. After World War II in 1945 Bulgaria became a communist state
and part of the Eastern Bloc, dominated by the USSR. Then, in
1990, the country abandoned Communism by popular assent and Bulgaria
moved towards democracy and free-market capitalism. Currently
Bulgaria is a parliamentary democracy and became a member of the
European Union in 2007 having joined NATO in 2004. It has a population
of approximately 7½ million.

Sofia
(Sofiya)
Sofia is the
capital and largest city of Bulgaria and is located in the west
of the country, at the foot of the Vitosha mountain, in the Sofia
Valley, surrounded by mountains on all sides. Its development
as a significant settlement owes much to its central position
in the Balkans. A number of ancient Roman, Byzantine and medieval
Bulgarian buildings have been preserved in the city and its outskirts.
Most notably, the 10th century Boyana Church (one of the UNESCO
World Heritage protected sites), the Church of St George, considered
the oldest building in Sofia, and also an early Byzantine Church
(St Sophia). The city has an extensive nightlife scene with many
nightclubs, live venues, pubs, "mehani" (traditional
taverns) and restaurants. Sofia has a humid continental climate
with high temperatures. Temperatures in Sofia generally remain
cooler than other parts of Bulgaria in summer, due to the high
altitude of the valley in which it is located.

it a popular spa resort. The city is the economic and cultural
centre of south western Bulgaria. Blagoevgrad features a pedestrianised
town centre with 19th century architecture and numerous restaurants,
cafés, coffee shops and boutiques. The climate is defined
