Shetland is a group of islands located off the northeast coast of mainland Scotland at the point of separation between the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea. It is also one of the 32 council areas of Scotland; the islands' administrative centre and only burgh is Lerwick, its virtual capital.
The largest island, known simply as "Mainland". Other main islands include Unst, Yell, Fetlar, Muckle Roe and Foula. Out of the approximately a hundred islands, there are only 16 that are inhabited. The prevailing climate is oceanic, with long mild winters and short cool summers. This all year round is moderate climate is due to the influence of the surrounding seas, and there is a complex geology, a rugged coastline and many low, rolling hills.
Although fishing has continued to be an important and traditional aspect of the economy, the discovery of North Sea oil in the 1970s significantly boosted incomes, employment and public sector revenues.
The local way of life still reflects the joint Norse and Scottish heritage, with wide use of the old Shetland dialect still surviving. There are numerous areas set aside to protect the local fauna and flora, including a number of important seabird nesting sites.
Transport between islands is primarily by ferry and the Shetland Islands Council operate various inter-island services. Shetland is also served by a domestic service from Lerwick to Aberdeen on mainland Scotland, operated by Northlink Ferries. Sumburgh Airport is the main airport on Shetland and is located close to Sumburgh Head, some 25 miles south of Lerwick. Loganair operates flights for FlyBe to other parts of the British Isles up to ten times a day, with destinations to Kirkwall, Aberdeen, Inverness, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
