Manx Hotels and B&B Accommodation in the Isle of Man
|
A popular
holiday destination for the British, with numerous hotels
and guest houses, the Isle of Man, (otherwise known simply
as "Mann"), is a British Crown Dependency, located
in the Irish Sea. Its people are known as Manx men and women,
and the Manx language is an old branch of the Gaelic languages.
The
lordship of the island has been under the jurisdiction the
British Crown since 1764, though the island never became
part of the United Kingdom and retained its status as an
internally self-governing jurisdiction.
Tynwald,
the island's parliament, was nominally founded in AD 979,
and is arguably the world's oldest continuous parliament.
The Isle of Man has a temperate climate, with cool summers
and mild winters. Travel to the island is by regular ferries
from the British mainland as well as flights to its airport
at Ronaldsway in the south of the island. The Isle of Man
is a low-tax economy with no capital gains tax, wealth tax,
stamp duty or inheritance tax.
Passports
issued by the Isle of Man Passport Office identify "British
Islands - Isle of Man" on the cover but the stated
nationality status is simply "British Citizen".
However, because Mann is not part of the European Union
it does not have free trade arrangements with Europe but
does with Britain, which also provides military, administrative
governance and other support to the islanders.

Manx
Currency

The
Manx Pound (or Isle of Man Pound) is a local issue of the
pound sterling, issued by the Isle of Man Government. Mann
is in "currency union" with the United
Kingdom, and the Manx Govenment issue local coins and banknotes
denominated in pounds sterling. The Isle of Man Treasury
states that the locally issued currency, United Kingdom
coinage and Bank of England notes are all legal tender within
the island. However, while UK notes and coins are generally
accepted in the Isle of Man, Manx notes and coins are not
generally accepted in mainland UK, though British banks
will generally exchange them over the counter. But, simpler
and best to spend them before you leave!
