Bosnia
and Herzegovina lies in south-eastern Europe, on the Balkan
Peninsula, bordered by Croatia to the north, west and south,
Serbia to the east, and Montenegro to the south. The country
is almost landlocked, except for 26 kilometres of Adriatic
Sea coastline. Bosnia is the largest geographic region of
the modern state with a moderate continental climate, marked
by hot summers and cold, snowy winters. Smaller Herzegovina
is at the southern tip of the country, with a Mediterranean
climate and topography.
Although its capital city is Sarajevo, the country is politically
decentralised and comprises two governing entities, the
Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republika Srpska.
Formerly part of the Republic of Yugoslavia, it gained its
independence during the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s and nowadays
is transforming its economy into a market-oriented system,
and it is a potential candidate for membership in the European
Union and NATO.

Banja
Luka
Banja
Luka is the second largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina,
located in the north-western part of the country. The area
around Banja Luka is mostly woodland, although there are
mountains a little further from the city. The city itself
is built in the Banja Luka valley, and is popular for its
pools, thermal springs, and spas. Other attractions of Banja
Luka are the Banj Hill and the waterfall of the Vrbas river
near Krupa. Rafting on the Vrbas river is currently becoming
a favourite amongst tourists. There is also fishing, rock
climbing and hiking along the canyon of the Vrbas between
Banja Luka and Jajce. Banja Luka has a continental climate,
with warm summers. Due to its long history, Banja Luka is
rich in culture. There are several museums including the
Museum of Bosanska Krajina, the Ethnographic Museum established
in 1930, and the Museum of Modern Art of Republika Srpska.

Mostar
Mostar
is situated on the Neretva River and was named after "the
bridge keepers" ( mostari) who guarded the Stari
Most (Old Bridge) over Neretva. The city is situated in
a beautiful valley bedded between high mountains of Herzegovina.
A significant portion of the city has been rebuilt and tourists
might be surprised to see that this formerly war torn city
is a lively and beautiful destination once again, particularly
the area within and around the old town.
