The Artist
Sue Platt
lives in Saddleworth and has a studio at Woodend Mill, Mossley
near Ashton under Lyne. She has a 1st class Honours degree in
the Visual Arts and a PGCE in Art and& Design. She spent
a number of years teaching predominantly printmaking at various
colleges including the former Bolton Institute (now the University
of Bolton), Oldham College and at Gallery Oldham.
Rooted very
much in Art and Science, Sue works in a variety of media: sculpture,
installation, printmaking, painting and mixed media . Being
somewhat of a collector of oddities, has translated into her
work, particularly the assemblages which include found objects
alongside other materials. In formal terms, the work involves
rigid structures and organic forms which can be clearly observed
throughout the body of work, curios' encased in boxes and containers.
She says of her working practice:
"I
am fascinated by the notion of discovering and collecting
objects and placing them in new contexts, but more importantly,
of how they are displayed and ordered. Of particular interest
are Wonder Room Collections from as early as the 1600s to
the early 1900s.
Found
objects have an inherent history and even when placed in a
new context, still maintain a link with their previous existence.
An object when placed behind glass is invested with a "preciousness".
It becomes protected and untouchable."
Sue's printmaking
is also quite eclectic. She works mainly with the monoprint
and collagraph techniques, whilst incorporating etchings and
linocuts into them. She also uses a process called Chine Colle
which involves embedding fine handmade Japanese papers into
the body of the print.
"My
concern is about acquiring objects and materials and transforming
them into artefacts that are both precious and mysterious."
Sue has
exhibited in a number of group and solo exhibitions, including,
the Drumcroon Art Centre, Wigan Greenpeace Exhibition in Aberdeen,
Dean Clough, Touring exhibition from Halifax to London, Surface
Gallery, Nottingham, The Pankhurst Centre, Manchester etc, and
has work in corporate and private collections.
Her influences
are many and include artists such as Tony Cragg, Mona Hatoum,
Louise Borgeous, Joseph Cornell and Rebecca Horne.
