The Artist
Sophie Nixon
was born in Knutsford in 1972 and graduated in 1995 with a BA
Honours in Fine Art from the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.
Now living in Sale, Sophie has a studio at Bankley Mills in
Levenshulme.
Her work
is influenced by time spent in city and landscapes. Currently
she is focussing on depicting memories of her time spent in
Manchester City Centre where she has spent more than ten years
living, working and socialising.
Sophie is
inspired by the works of Edward Hopper and the early city scenes
as well as the later abstract works of Rothko.
Her use
of mixed media on paper offers her the opportunity to depict
quite abstract view of city nightscenes and her oil on canvas
works are vivid representations of the buildings and people
that form her city scapes.
The different
medium feed each other and give her work an energy and feel
of the view. She
says:
"Working
in these two very different mediums offers me two very different
ways of making my art, the mixed media work are produced quickly
and as the media dry they meld and create their own picture,
nothing is forced in these pictures and the end result is
fluid and spontaneous.
My
oil paintings take longer as I layer the paint and this gives
me the opportunity to focus on the relationships of the people
in the work, why are they there, where are they going, and
the beauty of the play of light on the scene."
Sophie has
recently exhibited in the "Region" exhibition run
by New Balance Footwear and has work showing in various galleries
around Manchester City Centre and South Manchester.
